July 9, 2013

Miles: 482
Time on road: 9 hours 30 minutes

Woodstock, GA to Vicksburg, MS

Light rain as I finished loading the bike, or I should say overloading the bike. I am carrying some extra gear with me and I have almost twice as much on the bike as I did when I went to Alaska and completed the UCC.

Rain stopped before I left the dirveway at 6:30 and rode up to Acworth where I met Moe. Moe is ridding with me to Vicksburg. Tommorow he will be heading down to Lafayette, LA. Over the next few days while he is in Lafayette, he will be trying to find some Cajun hotties. Keep telling him that the Mexican Cuties are much spicer, but some people........

Picked up a few Georgia back roads and headed toward the Alabama state line.

Before reaching Alabama we came to I-20, crossed into Alabama on I-20 and continued on the slab for a few miles.

Soon we left I-20 and headed SW on Hwy 9. Hwy 22 to west on Hwy 80 and we rejoined I-20 before leaving the state of Alabama.

Arrived in Vicksburg around 3:00pm. This gave me some extra time to take a short drive throuth the Vicksburg Military National Park.

Time on road: 8 hours 15 minutes

Vicksburg, MS to Brenham, TX

Left this morning, crossed the Mississippi River, and headed west on I-20. Moe headed south with dreams of Cajun hoties in his head.

I spent about an hour and half on the slab, then turned SW for some LA two lane. 34 was really not a bad little road. Narrow and enough "curves" to keep me from going to sleep. Had a fairly good ride to the Texas state line.

Somewhere, out there in the middle, is the TX / LA state line.

Speed limits increased in Texas. 70-75 on narrow 2 lane roads.

Was not in Texas that long until it felt like I had ridden into an oven. Temps had been in the low 90s. I felt a blast of hot air, and within minutes temps were 100+.

Got into Brenham a little after 3:00pm According to the Weather Channel, it is only 101 here.

Should be crossing the border early tomorrow afternoon.

Miles today: 329
Total miles: 1,266
Time on road: 6 hours 15 minutes

Brenham, TX to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, MX

Left Brenham this morning and still on back roads. However, they are becoming basicaly straight, out in the open, and boring.

Short day down to Laredo. Stopped and got a few extra pesos for the next couple of days.

Crossed the border and got the green light. Wound my way through town and located Immigraction. Took about 30 minutes to complete the paper work and I am good for Mexico for the next 6 months.

As I was getting ready to leave, Jim from NJ parked his BMW in front of me. He had been over in Baja, crossed over to the mainland, and was headed to Lafayette, LA for a few days. Seems like that is beginning to be a theme.

After about 30 minutes, the sun was starting to get too hot to stand around talking so we went our separate ways.

Missed a few turns and took a tour of Nuevo Laredo. Finally got on the right road, found the hotel, and was done for the day.

Tomorrow I should have the time to do a little riding.

Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas to Cedral, San Luis Potosi

Got out of Nuevo Laredo this morning before traffic started back up. Of course, all of the traffic lights were red for the next 5 miles.

After riding for about an hour or so, mountains were beginning to appear in front of me and there was a continual increase in altitude.

Crossed over the mountains on the cuota and it could have been an interesting ride without all of the traffic. Temps were still in the low 70s which was a big change from the last few days.

My plans were to cross back over the mountains going east, ride south for about an hour, then head west back across the mountains again. GPS totally refused to cooperate. It would not route me across. All it would do was tell where to turn around and reroute by main highways. Tried working my way through but there were too many unmarked roads going in various directions. Finally listened to the GPS and went back to my original route.

In Mexico, the grass is greener in the middle of the road.

Got into Cedral around 2:00 and just made it a short day. Found a really expensive hotel (all of $25), checked out the adjacent restaurant, and settled in for the night.

Total miles: 1,899
Time on road: 4 hours 45 minutes

Cedral, San Luis Potosi to Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes

Today was a short ride down to Marco's. Left around 6:45 and the temperature was in the low 50s. Heavy wet fog for about the first 15 miles. Closed up the vents on the jacket and turned on the hand warmers. I should be OK for 15-30 minutes until the sun came up and started warming things up. Sun came up, temperature stayed the same. Around 11:00 it finally made it up to 60*.

Mostly cuotas down to Aguascalientes. Running through valleys with mountains off in the distance, and then crossing the mountains.

Found Marco's house without too much trouble. More good Mexican food, put the bikes to bed, and discussed plans for the upcoming rally.
